My theme for this year is “Killing My Darlings.”
Killing your darlings ordinarily means making sure everything in your written piece works for you and that it’s not just occupying space. In a more personal context, it is a metaphor for letting go of things that I have become too familiar with and am afraid to let go of. I had a conversation with someone last year about having difficulty reducing my 3-page assignment to 2. And in response, he told me to “kill my darlings.” That was the first time I heard this phrase; looking back, I can't help but ponder how this extends to other areas of my life.
It had me thinking of things I held on to and refused to weed out because I'd gotten attached to what they used to be or because I wanted so badly for them to be something they weren't. It becomes easy to stick to old patterns out of fear and failure, but you and I know that leaves no room for growth. This year, I have decided to step out of my comfort zone and do things that move my spirit.
My friends say I have lived multiple lives because, for a twenty-something-year-old, I have dabbled in so many kinds of jobs. I only recently found a semblance of a clear direction for what I want my life to look like. And I figured no one would hand that over to me; I have to take active steps to build a life for myself. Honestly, this wasn’t easy because it took multiple trials and failures. I eventually fell back into something that was right before my eyes. One of my first jobs was as a social media manager promoting a concert; it came from opening a fan page for my crush; feel free to judge me. At the time, I knew I was good at it, but I never saw it as a career prospect because I thought my mission was to be a human rights lawyer. However, over time, I started taking courses and getting jobs. It was only a matter of time before I developed a keen interest in marketing. Don’t get me wrong, I am no expert; if anything, I am still learning, but I also believe in learning through others. This is why I am starting this newsletter, where I can share my learnings and unique perspectives on marketing principles.
Every Saturday evening, you will get my perspective on core marketing concepts, access to marketing resources, job openings, and my interesting weekly finds.
If you have read to this point, it means you roll with stuff like that. So, welcome!
